The first trailer for Universal’s adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen has dropped and is feeding ius the feels. The musical maestros Benj Pasek and Justin Paul certainly do know how to make music that plucks at every one of our heartstrings.
Atypical actor Nik Dodani and The Hate U Give actress and overall queen Amandla Stenberg join a very young-looking Benjamin Platt. who reprises his role as the titular character.
Directed by Stephen Chbosky and penned for the screen by Steven Levenson (who wrote the book for the Broadway musical), Dear Evan Hansen follows Evan Hansen, an anxious and isolated high school student who writes letters to himself. Evan’s classmate Connor Murphy gets a hold of one of his letters and dies by suicide with the note in his pocket, leading Connor’s parents to believe it was a suicide note addressed to Evan. Soon, Evan gets caught in a complicated lie, pretending to have been Connor’s friend and forming a fabricated relationship with the Murphy family.
In addition to Dodani, Stenberg and Platt, the cast is quite stacked with Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore.
Also, my favorite song from the musical is “Waving Through a Window” in case you were wondering.
