Kim’s Convenience By Ins Choi – March 21 – April 19: Soulpepper Theatre Company & Adam Blanshay Productions in association with American Conservatory Theater brings the award-winning comedy drama to the Ahmanson Theater. The play, which inspired the Netflix hit, follows the Kim family and their Korean family-run corner store. Mr. Kim works hard to support his wife and children with his Toronto convenience store. As he evaluates his future, he faces both a changing neighborhood landscape and the gap between his values and those of his Canadian-born children. Playwright Ins Choi, who will also star in the production as the titular character, calls Kim’s Convenience his “love letter to his parents and to all first-generation immigrants who call Canada their home.” Ahmanson Theatre at The Music Center, 135 N. Hamid Rahmanian’s Song of the North March 21-March 29: Created by visionary artist Hamid Rahmanian, this stunning multimedia production uses shadow puppetry and projected animation to reimagine the Persian epic Shahnameh. At its heart is Manijeh, a fierce heroine navigating a world of mythical beasts who must use all her strengths and talents to rescue her beloved, Bijan, from a perilous predicament. Leprechaun in the Hood – 7 PM, March 17: HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY BITCHES! When Butch, Postmaster P, and Stray Bullet loot the local hip-hop mogul’s studio to fund their demo album, the threesome unwittingly ends up with the secret of Mack Daddy’s success: a magical flute. New Jack City and a conversation with Mario Van Peebles – 7:30 PM, March 19: Vidiots is thrilled to welcome the legendary multi-hyphenate Mario Van Peebles for a special screening of his directorial debut film New Jack City followed by a conversation with Van Peebles and Santi Elijah Holley, the author of An Amerikan Family: The Shakurs and the Nation They Created, and a forthcoming book on Melvin Van Peebles and independent Black cinema.

Mario Van Peebles remixes the blaxploitation genre for the 1990s in this gritty gangster flick. The Cash Money Brothers with kingpin Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) at their helm run the steets and drug trade of New York City. Two hard-nosed NYPD officers (Ice-T and Judd Nelson) have got to go undercover to bring down the pushers and save the streets of Harlem from the crack epidemic. An electric debut that helped usher in the urban gangster wave of the 1990s, with a killer soundtrack, and tons of cameos from Fab Five Freddy, Flava Flav, Eek-a-Mouse, and Keith Sweat, to name a few, New Jack City is an intoxicating crime classic, best enjoyed big and loud! Zardoz with  Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon – 9:45 PM, March 20: Strap on your red speedo and your ammunition holster, comb your mustache AND your ponytail and get ready to head into the far future with John Boorman’s science fiction epic Zardoz! With giant stone heads that vomit rifles to penis-hating immortals that hold all the world’s knowledge, to one of the most iconic wardrobe choices in cinema history, Zardoz continues to deliver the goods, one God-Wizard at a time! This Is Spinal Tap I and II – March 21: ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?! Gardena Cinema is screening This Is Spinal Tap I and This Is Spinal Tap II from the late, great Rob Reiner. Starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, the legendary rock mockumentary franchise paved the other cult rock-mocks that have come out of Hollywood. This Is Spinal Tap was released in 1984 and introduced us to the titular heavy metal band and their adventures. She Dared to Dream – 7 PM, March 17: Join the California African American Museum for a screening of theaward-winning documentary, She Dared to Dream, featuring Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley. Running just under 30 minutes, the film offers an intimate and deeply moving portrait of Congresswoman Pressley—the first Black woman elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress. Through her story, the film explores racial justice, gender equity, and economic reform, while reflecting on what it means to lead with courage, vulnerability, and authenticity in today’s political climate. Aama Studio: Threads of Legacy Film Salon 3 PM, March 21: Drawing from Tavares Strachan’s immersive excursions into hidden histories and speculative futures in the exhibition The Day Tomorrow Began, mother and daughter design duo Aama Studio welcome us to a film salon where they will weave cinema, textiles, and personal memory to tell intergenerational stories. A tour of the exhibition, short films, and discussions will explore Black liberation, arcs of migration, and evolving identities, linking ancestral memory to possibilities of today and tomorrow. LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.

R.I.P. D.E.I. 2: Black From the Dead – 10:30 PM, March 21: Improv comedy about the fall of racial equality.
After a hundred and fifty years or 10-12 depending on who you ask, D.E.I. has come to an end. We might as well do some comedy about it. Join Astronomy Club as we gather together to celebrate the homegoing of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Affirmative Action, Black History Month, etc. They’re dead now, or did they ever exist? Using personal stories and interviews from the audience as inspiration, Astronomy Club + special guests will improvise scenes honoring our history, because Black History is everyone’s history… at least it was. Or was it? We’re actually not sure what we’re allowed to say anymore. Don’t arrest us! Improvised “Best Picture” – 7 PM, March 22: A group of LA’s best improvisers attempt to remaster this year’s 2026 Oscar Best Picture Winner. Some have seen the movie…some have not. A horde of UCB performers will join forces to improvise and remaster which ever movie wins the 2026 Oscar for Best Picture. It all depends on what wins the weekend prior. It could be F1, Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, etc. It will be confusing, delightful, innovative but definitely unpredictable. Happy Hour Saturdays w/ Jenny – through March 28For three Saturday Happy Hours in March, comedian Jenny Yang will work out new material about her Chinese medicine fertility experiences in Taiwan, the necessity for women to be single, childless and moisturized, and what it means to be more gay, Mexican and immigrant every single day in 2026.
