The 93rd annual Academy Awards were, as usual, filled with many white winners this year, but we did see some colorful victories.

Nomadland‘s Chloe Zhao made history as the first woman of color to win Best Director. Her American wanderlust drama starring Frances McDormand also won Best Picture — and McDormand also won for Best Lead Actress.

Other notable people of color who took home trophies for the night include Judas and the Black Messiah star King Daniel Kaluuya, who was honored with Best Actor in a Supporting Role while Korean acting icon Yuh-Jung Youn won Best Supporting Actress for her turn as the charismatic grandma in Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari.

H.E.R., the half Filipino and half Black queen, won Best Song for “Fight For You” from Judas and the Black Messiah. She’s in good company as fellow Filipino Robert Lopez won in the same category for Frozen‘s “Let It Go” in 2013 and for Coco‘s “Remember Me” in 2017.

On top of that, Kemp Powers’ Soul won for Best Animated Feature and Jon Batiste won for Best Score for the Pixar pic. Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez-Rivera won the Oscar on Sunday for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. With that, Neal and Wilson became the first Black women to win in the category. Speaking of the Netflix pic about the music legend, we were expecting the late, great Chadwick Boseman to win Best Actor for his role in the film, but were surprised when Anthony Hopkins took home the trophy, ending the ceremony on a whimper.
