Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is about to join a class of actresses a very specific genre of film: the modernized literary classic. There was Alicia Silverstone in Clueless (based Jane Austen’s Emma); Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You (Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew) and Emma Stone in Easy A (Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter). The Never Have I Ever star adds some color to the mix of this specific genre as she is set to star in her first feature film The Netherfeld Girls which is a fresh, modern spin on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, according to Variety.

Written and directed by Becca Gleason, The Netherfield Girls was sold to Netflix and will feature Ramakrishnan as the character of Lizzie Bennet, who eventually discovers the man she thinks is Mr. Wrong is in fact Mr. Right — just like Pride and Prejudice.

Place your bets now: which actor of color do you think will play her Mr. Darcy?

Temple Hill Entertainment is producing The Netherfield Girls. A release date has not been announced.

Ramakrishnan is repped by ICM Partners, Premier Artists Management, and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson
