When Marvel Studios released footage at Brazil Comic-Con in 2019, yours truly was there to soak in the beauty that soon-to-be Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao created with the upcoming Eternals. I immediately thought, “This does NOT look like a Marvel film… this looks like some epic next-level Lord of the Rings shit.” Marvel released the final trailer and new poster for Eternals this morning and goddam this is going to be exactly that: epic and next level.

The film, which opens November 5 in theaters, introduces us to a new rag-tag group of cosmic superheroes and the trailer gives us some context as to what the hell they are doing on Earth and what their place is in the MCU. They are a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

Watch the trailer below and be gobsmacked by its practical “magic hour” shots courtesy of the talented Zhao.

Eternals is the next MCU movie in line after the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3. Marvel Studios also switched things up when it came to casting, making the characters a lot more inclusive with gender-flipped roles as well as race bending. Eternals also includes an LGBTQ character and the first deaf hero played by Ridloff.

And thank God this new trailer explained more to us. I mean, I would have watched it any way, but putting the story into context help.

Kevin Feige and Nate Moore are the producers of Eternals, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Kevin de la Noy serving as executive producers. The story is by Ryan Firpo & Matthew K. Firpo, and the screenplay is by Zhao and Zhao & Patrick Burleigh.
