Susmaryosep! Or should I say “Susmary-Josep!” Jo Koy’s single camera camera comedy Josep has received a pilot order at ABC.

Side bar: “susmaryosep” is Tagalog slang. It’s a combo of “Jesus, Mary and Joseph” and is usually an exclamation of  anxiety, frustration or surprise. It can mean translated any way you want. In this case, it’s excitement.

The more you know…

Anyway…

Josep was in development at ABC last year. The show follows a recently divorced Filipino American nurse (Koy) attempting to navigate dating, fatherhood and a very Filipino mother who loves to “help.”

In addition to starring, Jo Koy will serve as executive producer alongside Steve Joe, who also wrote the pilot.Kourtney Kang will also executive produce along with The Detective Agency’s Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar, Joe Meloche, and  Imminent Collision’s Randall Park, Michael Golamco and Hieu Ho. 20th Television is the studio.

Jo Koy has numerous comedy specials with Jo Koy: In His Elements, most recent one released on Netflix. The special follows him as he travels to the Philippines to highlight the local culture as well as Filipino-American comedians, DJs, and hip hop dancers. He will shoot his fourth special for Netflix beginning in March at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Up next for the comedian-actor is the family comedy Easter Sunday from Amblin Partners and Rideback. The movie is based on his life experiences and is set to debut on April 1. It will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
