During Comic-Con this past weekend fans were treated to a look at HBO Max’s new animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai from executive producer and showrunner Tze Chun. In addition, they announced that Zach Galligan is set to reprise his role as Billy from the iconic movies and Asian icons Sandra Oh, Randall Park, George Takei, and Bowen Yang will also guest star. The series is set to debut in 2023 to HBO Max, and later on Cartoon Network.
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai follows the close-knit Wing family in the prequel series that unlocks the mystery of how a 10-year-old Sam Wing (Izaac Wang) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.
Sam is a naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become Mr. Wing, the mysterious shopkeep and Gizmo’s guardian in the original Gremlins films. Young Sam lives with his family in the tiny apartment behind their struggling medicine shop. Sheltered and cautious, Sam will be thrown into the adventure of a lifetime when he promises his Grandpa he’ll get Gizmo home.
The aforementioned new guest stars join the previously announced voice cast which includes more icons including Ming-Na Wen as matriarch Fong Wing as well as James Hong who will star as Grandpa. Trailblazer BD Wong is set to play Hon Wing, Sam’s father.
Steeped in China’s rich culture and mythology, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai takes viewers back to 1920s Shanghai where the Wing family first discovers the mysterious creature. Sam Wing, the youngest in the family, accepts the dangerous task to take Gizmo home and embarks on a journey through the Chinese countryside. Sam and Gizmo are joined by a teenage street thief named Elle, and together, they encounter—and sometimes battle—colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Along their quest, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
