Chappell Roan is having quite the moment.
The singer is on this wild meteoric pop cultural rise as she graced the red carpet of the MTV VMAs dressed in Joan of Arc regalia and and lit the stage on fire in a performance of “Good Luck, Babe!” while donned in a suit of armor.
While on the red carpet she made it clear she was not fucking around with a photographer who told her to “Shut the fuck up”. She responded wit a “Not me, bitch!” and it was right then and there I fell in love. I fell in love with the fact that I never had to deal with the VMA red carpet in my life and also I am, like, so into Chappell Roan right now.
Not being of the proper age demographic, I was aware of CR but not familiar with her music. I hear more of her amazing, fuck-the-status-quo news stories before hearing a good portion of her music. I love how she said “Fuck H&M” with such RuPaul fervor when it came to collaborating with a brand; turned down an invitation to the White House; put her “entitled fans” in check; and dedicated her Best New Artist win at the VMAs to “queer and trans people who fuel pop” and her fellow “queer kids in the midwest”. She also got a gag-worthy shout-out in Beyoncé’s recent interview with GQ.
And every time I hear “HOT TO GO!” I can’t help but think of Fast Times at Ridgemont High so I put it together with the opening credits of the Amy Heckerling classic and it totally fits.
Enjoy… and long live Chappell Roan.
