The Netflix series adaptation of the critically acclaimed Filipino comic series Trese is headed stateside on June 11 — and it looks damn sickening.
The comics were created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo and will get the anime treatment in a series whose logline reads: “In Manila, where dark supernatural forces pervade the criminal underworld, it’s up to Alexandra Trese to keep the peace — but there’s a storm brewing.”
Trese continues to expand Netflix’s repertoire of international animated fare — and this time its the Philippines, an Asian country that often gets overlooked when it comes to its film and TV industry.
The English dub of the series is filled with performers of Filipino descent — as it should be. Taking the lead is Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars) who stars as the titular Trese while and Liza Soberano voices the character in the Tagalog version. The cast lending their voices to the English dub also includes Dante Basco (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story), Nicole Scherzinger (Moana), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Lou Diamond Phillips (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Jon Jon Briones (Ratched).
The series will follow Alexandra Trese, who specializes in supernatural crimes — and there is a bunch of that happening in Manila. The trailer feels Filipino with accents and its Manila vibe. It also includes glimpses of the ancient writing script from the Philippines, babayin — check out the screenshot below.
