Searchlight Pictures has just dropped the first trailer for the Pride and Prejudice-inspired rom-com Fire Island written and starring Joel Kim Booster and directed by Andrew Ahn. First off, this film looks like a goddam good time. Second if you look at the poster, it has four Asian actors on the title AND its directed by an Asian AND its a LGBTQIA+ narrative. There’s something very major about that.
Debuting on Hulu on June 3 just in time for Pride, the film is set in the iconic, titular queer destination and tells a modern day Jane Austen rom-com via an intersectional, multicultural lens of queerness and romance that we don’t really see often. The story centers around two best friends (Booster and Bowen Yang) who set out to have a legendary summer adventure with the help of cheap rosé and their cadre of eclectic friends.
The film also stars Margaret Cho, Conrad Ricamora, Tomas Matos, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Torian Miller, Nick Adams, and Zane Phillips.
The trailer is giving me ’80s summer cult movie tea except not as white and not as straight. Check out the poster below.
